URBAN RENEWAL

The sun slides down behind brick dust,

Sequential sledgehammers fall, stone

The big iron ball

to pigeons cooing in eaves   

as black feathers

float on to blueprint   

parking lots.

Many know this quote is from a cult classic Hollywood movie "Shawshank Redemption".

 But Few know that the story was based from a novella called Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption by Stephen King, from his collection Different Seasons (1982). It was adapted for the screen in 1994 as The Shawshank Redemption, which was nominated for seven Academy Awards in 1994, including Best Picture

Eastman Kodak Company (NYSE: EK) (commonly known as Kodak) is a multinational imaging and photographic equipment, materials and services company headquartered in Rochester, New York, United States and incorporated in New Jersey. It was founded by George Eastman in 1892.

The letter "K" was a favorite of Eastman's; he is quoted as saying, "it seems a strong, incisive sort of letter."  He and his mother devised the name Kodak with an anagram set. Eastman said that there were three principal concepts he used in creating the name: it should be short; one cannot mispronounce it, and it could not resemble anything or be associated with anything but Kodak.

It has also been suggested that "Kodak" originated from the suggestion of David Houston, a fellow photographic inventor who held the patents to several roll film camera concepts that he later sold to Eastman.Houston, who started receiving patents in 1881, was said to have chosen "Nodak" as a nickname of his home state, North Dakota (NoDak). This is contested by other historians, however, who cite that Kodak was trademarked prior to Eastman buying Houston's patents.

The squirrel next door sorry next tree..!!

Out all of all the animals that thrive in busy suburban areas, squirrels undoubtedly have to be one of the cutest and most interesting.  If you’re fortunate enough to see these critters roaming around your sidewalk or backyard you might take how fascinating squirrels are for granted.  

HENCE SOME FACTS ABOUT SQUIRRELS FOR YOU :

Squirrels are found in TONS of different countries across almost the entire planet.  In fact, there are only two continents that don’t have squirrels – Antarctica and Australia.

Even though they are relatively small in size, squirrels are absolutely phenomenal jumpers.  In the right conditions, a full grown squirrel can jump as far as twenty feet!  This is because squirrels have extremely powerful back legs that enable them to push off of objects and leap incredible distances.

The hind legs of all squirrels are double jointed.  This adaptation allows them to nimbly scramble up and down trees with ease.

Some squirrels can fall as far as 100 feet without sustaining any type of injury – they sometimes can use their fluffy tail as a sort of make shift parachute!

Squirrels can easily eat their entire body weight every week (usually only around 1.5 pounds).

A male squirrel can detect a female squirrel in heat from up to a whole mile away!  Females usually give birth to between 2-4 baby squirrels every mating season.

A squirrel can actually sometime see things that are completely behind them.  This is due to the unique way that their eyes are positioned on their heads.

It can be dangerous if consumed orally. It can be hallucinogenic.

This picture isnt of Vinca rose. I found this wild flower on  a trek, very similar to it and hence clicked it. This picture reminds me of the Microsoft's pre installed wallpaper

Flowers in the garden..!!!

Many, if not most, plants considered decorative flowers originated as weeds, which if attractive enough would sometimes be tolerated by farmers because of their appeal. This led to an artificial selection process, producing ever-prettier (to humans) flowers. This is thought to have occurred for the entire history of agriculture, perhaps even slightly earlier, when people tended to favor naturally occurring food-gathering spots. This may also explain why many flowers function as companion plants to more useful agricultural plants; they had evolved that symbiotic relationship with the food plants before either was domesticated, and therefore was found in the same area, convenient to be selected as an attractive plant.

Once domesticated, though, most flowers were grown either separately or as part of gardens having some other primary function. In the West, the idea of gardens dedicated to flowers did not become common until the 19th century, though in fact many modern gardens are indeed flower gardens. Flower gardens are, indeed, a key factor in modern landscape design and even architecture, especially for large businesses, some of which pay to have large flower gardens torn out and replaced entirely each season, in order to keep the color patterns consistent.

Well, that's some light on how flower garden became an important part of a landscape design :)

The domestic dog has a predisposition to exhibit a social intelligence that is uncommon in the animal world. Dogs are capable of learning in a number of ways, such as through simple reinforcement and by observation.

Dogs go through a series of stages of cognitive development. As with humans, the understanding that objects not being actively perceived still remain in existence (called object permanence) is not present at birth. It develops as the young dog learns to interact intentionally with objects around it, at roughly 8 weeks of age

 In his late 30s, Marquis Mills Converse, who was previously a respected manager at a footwear manufacturing firm, opened the Converse Rubber Shoe Company (unrelated to the Boston Rubber Shoe Company founded by fourth cousin Elisha Converse) in Malden, Massachusetts in February 1908. The company was a rubber shoe manufacturer, providing winterized rubber soled footwear for men, women, and children. 

The company's main turning point came in 1917 when the Converse All-Star basketball shoe was introduced. Then in 1921, a basketball player named Charles H. "Chuck" Taylor walked into Converse complaining of sore feet. Converse gave him a job. He worked as a salesman and ambassador, promoting the shoes around the United States, and in 1923 his signature was added to the All Star patch. He continued this work until shortly before his death in 1969.

Beginning in the 1850s, the tea industry rapidly expanded, consuming vast tracts of land for tea plantations. By the turn of the century, Assam became the leading tea producing region in the world
